Carrie Underwood Shows Off Her Wedding Ring on ‘Today

She may not still be rocking her custom Monique Lhuiller gown, but there was no mistaking Carrie Underwood’s honeymoon glow as she hit the Today show stage Friday morning to not only perform hits like “Undo It” and “Cowboy Casanova”, but also flaunt her sparkling new wedding band. After tying the knot with hockey player Mike Fisher, 30, in a Southern style wedding earlier this month, Underwood has swapped a diamond band by jeweler Jonathon Arndt for the yellow diamond engagement ring he had also designed for her. So how’s married life treating the country queen? “It’s a lot like dating life,” she said, which includes continuing their long distance relationship with hockey player husband Fisher in Canada, where he plays for the Ottawa Senators. “It’s good,” she says. “We’re both very busy people and understand each other’s life, so we’re okay with it.” ––Alison Schwartz

Ellen DeGeneres Quits American Idol - Are You Surprised?

Well here's something I didn't see coming — while the industry is buzzing with rumors about who may take Simon Cowell's place on American Idol, Ellen DeGeneres has bowed out of judging duties after only one season. She released the following statement:

"I told them I wouldn’t leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for. I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on Idol and I am very grateful for the year I had, I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be."

I have to admit that I didn't think Ellen brought a ton to the judges table, but with her five-year contract, I didn't expect to see her drop out. Not to mention that she doesn't exactly seem like the quitting type, though it might be beneficial for the show to go back to three judges. Are you surprised to hear this news?

Oh my, can I put some eye cream on you?

Dr. Kate’s Guide to Beauty and Fashion

P194401_hero

With a title like “Dr. Kate’s guide to beauty and fashion” I feel the need to first assure you of my credentials.  I am indeed a scientist.  I am also a girl; 28 years old to date. I work as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Stanford University, California, and while I might spend a lot of time in lab wearing the stereotypical white coat, jeans and flats; I also do all the usual girly things like shopping, styling my hair, putting on makeup, waxing, getting my eyelashes dyed (a must for someone so blonde), exfoliating, tanning (well, attempting to), dieting, and I’ve been known to get on my sewing machine and sew the occasional dress or two.

On Monday this week I left my basement lab around lunchtime to walk to Stanford Shopping Center. I needed to buy makeup and also to get outdoors for some much needed sun. At Macy’s I reminded myself that I was only there to buy my trusted Christian Dior foundation and nothing else. But this attempt to avoid impulse purchases was threatened by the expert sales skills of the makeup counter ladies.  One gasped and looked at my face closer. “Oh my, can I put some eye cream on you?” This cleverly played straight into my I’m-getting-closer-to-30 irrational fear of eye wrinkles. Then as I waited at the checkout in Andronico's to buy a zero-calorie bottle of flavored water I glanced at the displayed magazines and caught a title on the cover of Elle: “Think you’re not hot? Why all men really want you now”. Despite my logical self I still desperately wanted to buy this magazine to reassure myself that I am attractive, at least to some men.

The point of this story is not to highlight how good the sales and marketing surrounding beauty and fashion is at getting us to part with our money. Instead I want to point out that because our buying is largely driven by emotions rather than fact we’re at risk of not choosing the right product or service.  And the right choice is important, especially for those of us trying to survive on a budget. So we need to temper this approach. Each purchase – whether it be a new pair of jeans, or a face cream, or spa treatment – is an investment and should be treated as such. No successful investor would acquire commodities, properly, or whole companies without first doing due diligence. And neither should you when it comes to your beauty and fashion purchases. Especially because you’re investing in the most important thing on the planet – you!

My message is that your beauty and fashion due diligence should be guided by scientific evidence. Science has given us our most important products, or arguably all our products; from nylon stockings to mascara that stays on all day long.  But the industry is two-sided. On one hand there are the personal care super companies – L’Oreal or Procter and Gamble to name a couple – with large R&D labs and budgets who do valued and credible scientific research which provides benefits to mankind even beyond the consumer products that eventuate. On the other there is a lot of hocus pocus and hand waving from companies who sell products worth little beyond the beautiful packaging and false dreams of flawless beauty.

Since I already factor scientific understanding into my beauty and fashion purchases it makes sense that I should share this information. I do my homework. Wading through the scientific literature doesn’t seem nearly as arduous when it’s to find out exciting things like how to get a better result from styling my hair with my flat iron (the topic of my next post). In this blog I will give a summary of my findings and recommendations. I won’t always be right. Scientists aren’t always right. But I can give you my best understanding from the most up-to-date studies.

To end this first post I’d like to say a big thanks to Ryan and Liv for hosting this community and providing such a valuable resource for all our online beauty and fashion purchases. Some very exciting developments are coming this way soon.

And to anyone who was wondering; I didn’t buy the eye cream or the magazine.

Lauren Conrad - Celebrity Style

Lauren Conrad has worn many a denim cutoff, but she hasn't worn them the way she did while shopping at Herve Leger in LA recently. We normally pair denim shorts with a tank or a tee, but Lauren opted to wear hers with a cozy Vince hooded dolman sweater. Quite the fresh fusion. For further flavor, she threw on tan accessories, including a Miu Miu crossbody bag and a braided belt. The glasses are a cool-cum-nerdy finishing touch.

Vince Hooded Dolman Sweater - $148.00

Womens Silverlake Short w/Tidal Pocket - $158.00

Tori Skinny Braided Belt - $19.50

Wave Sandals - $24.00

What To Wear To Work

Editor’s note: The following is written by Rachel Zoe, stylist, fashion designer, and creator of The Zoe Report. This week Rachel advises on work wardrobe dos and dont's.

Thankfully, the rules of business dressing are not how they used to be. While I do love a classic secretary suave look — à la Banana Republic'sMad Men-inspired silhouettes — I think the modern day woman is fortunate to have a little bit more flexibility with her wardrobe. The level of freedom depends, of course, on the type of work environment you're in.

For instance, if you are someone in a corporate setting, you should aim to build your wardrobe all around a great suit! Find one that fits perfectly (or have it tailored) in black, gray, or another neutral, then wear it a million different ways. The idea is that when you invest in a full suit, you can break it up and incorporate each piece — a jacket, vest, pants, pencil skirt, etc. — with what you already have in your closet. Try something as simple as wearing your suit jacket over a white blouse and pair of jeans, then punch it up with an accessory or two.

To read the rest of Rachel's work style tips and her favorite career pieces, read more.

I say yes to jeans at work because I think they have come a long way from their casual origin. Just make sure if you do decide to wear denim into the office to keep it very clean and crisp in a black or dark blue wash. Remember, you're replacing proper trousers so don't wear anything too tight or too baggy. When picking out what to wear on top, always aim for understated blouses or button-ups in classic solid colors — I love white and cream — or subtle patterns . . . the three Ps: paisleys, polka dots, and pinstripes!

As far as shoes go, you are always on the right track with a sturdy heel or wedge — open-toe is fine as long as your toes have been pedicured! — but avoid at all costs wearing your tranny pumps with shorts or a miniskirt. Also, for all of you women who walk to work in your sneakers with a suit — remember Working Girl? — may I please offer that you wear instead a pair of ballet flats or flat boots? They are just as comfy as sneakers and astonishingly more chic!

Now for my ladies who work in a more creative field, I say almost anything goes . . . don't be afraid to cross over your social attire with your work attire. Just keep in mind a few guidelines and you can't go wrong . . . 1. Don't wear flip-flops ever 2. Don't wear short shorts or micro minis 3. Do wear skinny jeans, but balance them out with a very appropriate top 4. Choose your accessories wisely. That is, if you wear a statement necklace, don't overdo it with the rest of your jewelry.

Lastly, if you are ever unsure about something, just trust your gut instinct and remember that overt sexiness is never cool in a work environment. Keep your look classy and sophisticated with a personal touch through accessories and you will always close the deal. xoRZ

Kate Bosworth's Celebrity Style

As written by FabSugar

Kate Bosworth, always a lady. She showed her pretty face to support Burberry designer Christopher Bailey's beauty launch. At a garden tea party in Beverly Hills, Kate wore a beige and gold sheer pre-Fall Burberry dress and neutral accessories. The tan belt breaks up the monochrome neutrals while a funky embellished bag adds a touch of whimsy. Tea time!
