How to Compensate for Impulse Buys

You might give in every now and then to impulse buying, and that's okay. Impulsebuying becomes a bad habit when you are constantly broke from your spending habitsand/or what you've bought goes to waste. Let's say you're animpulse buyer when you see a bargain. Your house is so full of $1 trinkets and $5 junk that you have no storage space and the place always looks messy. Remember, just because it's on sale, doesn't mean you actuallyneed it.

If you've given into impulse buying, there is a way you can make up for it. Sell something that you never use. Make sure the item you're selling can be sold for an amount close to what your impulse buy cost. So if you bought a $10 sweater on impulse, sell that pair of $30 shoes you never wear. If you can get more than $10 for the shoes that's great, but if not, at least try to sell them for an amount close to what the impulse buy costs.

We all give in to our temptations every now and then. What's important is that you recognize the problem and are learning how you can control it.

5 Quick Layering Tips to Keep You Warm Without Adding Bulk

There are five essential items to keep you warm and chic at the same time.

1. Boyfriend Cardigan: J.Crew does the perfect boyfriend cardigan. In wool or cashmere, it is skinny enough to stick under your coat or fur vest, but still gives you that extra layer of warmth.

2. Nubby Tights: I love black tights. They make that scandalously short skirt passable for the office, and they are functional! Throw on Hue’s thick, soft tights, pair them with your summer platforms and a dress, and you’re off.

3. Fur Vest: Whether faux or real, fur is a surefire way to stay warm. Stick your vest over a T-shirt, belt it for a slim silhouette and you’re set. Fabulous Furs does a faux Mongolian lamb vest that had us all swearing it was straight off the Ann Demeulemeester runway.

4. Thigh-High Boots: Gone are the days of Pretty Woman connotations with thigh-high boots. Ralph Lauren does a gorgeous black suede high-heeled boot. Jessica Simpson’s line offers a more budget-friendly option.

5. Skinny Shirts: The office was buzzing this morning when word came around that Skinny Shirts had hit the market. These shirts are thin enough to layer under your favorite cashmere sweater, while adding an adorable Peter Pan collar to your ensemble, and they keep you warm to boot! Genius.

Winter skirts are here, and with some leather here, a brocade there, and a mid-calf length or two—the chicest new length, by the way, seen runways the world 'round—these skirts will carry you all the way through the cold months. Try them with thick tights and platforms (forget the rules: your sandals can do double duty this winter when paired with the appropriate hosiery) or boyish flat oxfords and a shrunken velvet blazer. But whichever way you sport them, when it comes to winter skirts, the legs have it. Don't let yours surrender to the chill!

TIP: For winter skirts in a pattern, stick to dark or neutral-colored leggings or tights. If you're feeling adventurous (or the weather is particularly nasty), go for a cable-knit, a thermal, or a wool-blend legwear.

Wednesdays: The best day to buy shoes.

We already know some of the best shopping deals are found online - but did you know some days are better than others to find the steepest discounts? ShopItToMe.com, which scours sales at more than 100 online retailers, ran a survey for me showing what days of the week certain categories of items carry the biggest discounts. Their data was compiled between June 2009 and June 2010 and analyzed over 1 million sale items on the web. From sunglasses to bathing suits to handbags and menswear, they got me the inside scoop.

My advice is to read this through, click print and keep the list stored by your computer as a helpful reminder next time you want to shop on the Web.

Mondays: Best for buying men’s and women’s dress pants. The average sale is about 48 percent off.
Mondays: Also great for purchasing sunglasses. The average discount is 55 percent.
Tuesdays: Best for buying men’s apparel. The average discount is 42 percent.
Wednesdays: Find lowest prices on shoes. The average discount is 38 percent.
Wednesdays: Also find best deals on kids’ clothing. The average discount is around 40 percent.
Thursdays: Best for buying women’s handbags. The average discount is 36 percent.
Fridays: Biggest sales on accessories like jewelry, belts and scarves. The average discount is 42 percent.
Saturdays: Best sales on intimates (37 percent off) and jackets/outerwear (51 percent off).
Sundays: Buy your swimsuits for an average 52 percent off!

Oprah’s Favorite Fashion Things

Oprah‘s final “Favorite Things” episode aired a few weeks back. If you haven’t watched the crowd reactions already, you should (or check out audience reactions from the whole last season on this awesome tumblr). Everyone went nuts. Of course, if I was being gifted a 2012 Volkswagon Beetle, an iPad, and some Le Creuset cookware, I’d be doing a happy dance too.

Having your product on Oprah‘s “Favorite Things” things list is akin to having your book chosen for her book club–meaning it will sell. And often, Oprah’s favorite stuff is beauty and fashion-related (but the fashion tends to be on the comfort-end–nothing wrong with that). Previously Oprah-endorsed favorite things like Spanx and Uggs became ubiquitous best-sellers after earning a spot on the “Favorite Things” list, according to AOL’s Small Business site. Her “Favorite Things” episode has even saved some companies from the brink of bankruptcy.

So we decided to take a look at this year’s fashion and beauty-related “favorite things” as well as “favorite things” of years past (yes, J.Lo’s velour sweatsuit was on the list in ’02). Are any of them your favorite things too?

Black Friday Sales 2010 - Best Deals from Target, Macys, and more...

The answer is yes. Black Friday deals are worth it. Buy one get one free, $50 gift credits, and giveaways are just the start of what you will find at this year’s Black Friday sales. Retailers are still battling the recession and are offering all kinds of incentives for shoppers (including offering deals earlier than Friday). Don't just think about your Holiday shopping on the day after Thanksiving. Stock up for birthday party gifts and other present giving opportunities throughout the year.

Here is the low down on the hows and wheres of getting the most out of Black Friday sales in New York City and beyond:

Things to know:

Just because you don’t get there are 3 am and trample on people does not mean that you will not get a deal. Retailers run their deals all weekend and you can usually score early Sunday morning instead of camping out at Macy’s door.

”Hard goods such as electronics and toys are good bets on Black Friday,” says Vanessa Reyes owner of Stella Gialla at Atlas Park. Try to focus your efforts on major retailers and electronics stores. Small boutiques are less likely to have blow out sales.

Try to shop alone. The fewer people you bring along with you the better time you will have navigating the crowds and lines.

Toys R Us has some pop up shops which may be less crowded since not everyone knows about them. Give them a try rather than the regular stores.

Here are some of the best deals we think are worth checking out:

Toys R Us will open their stores at 10pm on Thursday for Black Friday so as soon as you recover from Thanksgiving dinner you can head to the stores. This is probably Black Fridays biggest sale with unadvertised additional sales and tons of giveaways. Some highlights include a $50 Gift Card with the purchase of any iPod touch and 50% off many toys in the store.

Macy’s is probably the best place to go on Black Friday. They are offering 20% off almost everything in the store with additional savings throughout. This year they open at 4am.

Target also opens at 4am on Black Friday. They are offering a $50 Target gift card with purchase of an 8GB iPod touch, a $49 7" portable DVD player, DVDs for $1.99-$7.99 (most expensive is Blu-Ray), and really amazing toy deals. The website 2010 Black Friday Ads has leaked their ad page, where you can check out everything they are offering (hint: you will not be disappointed).

Best Buy: Open at 5am Friday. Best Buy is known for having large crowds just waiting outside, so please be careful. Nooks for $99.99, Xbox 360 with 3 game bundle for $199.99, really good deals on TVs, $125 Best Buy gift card with purchase of a MacBook Pro, cell phones for $1 with a 2-year contract, and more.

As if Walmart weren't already cheap enough, they are offering sales from 5am-11am on Black Friday. Highlights include $29 photo frame, digital cameras for $59-$189, $89 for Nintendo DS Lite, 60+ video games priced at $7, various toys from $4-$25, and $8 jeans. The 2010 Black Friday Ads website will have all the online Walmart deals posted on November 22.

Old Navy opens Friday at midnight, but they are having deals all weekend. On Saturday they have gloves for $1.50, and clothing deals for the whole family like $10 turtle necks, $5 sweaters, and $10 performance fleece.

Gymboree Black Friday information has not yet leaked.

The Queens Center Mall in Elmhurst will open at midnight on Black Friday. The first 300 people to line up at the mall's main entrance (Queens Boulevard) will receive a $10 Gfit Card and special store offers. Plus you will have a chance to unwrap holiday prizes. The most important tip we can offer about Black Friday is to be safe. Watch your kids and watch yourself, it can get crazy out there.

Also check Amazon's Black Friday Deals with new deals all week long, and check for online deals at these retailers as well, if you want to avoid the lines altogether.
